J. Edgar staring Leonardo DiCaprio and directed by Clint Eastwood was released this Friday, November 11, 2011.Now initially I had no desire to see the movie. I just could not wrap my brain around watching a movie about one of the most controversial, secretive, underhanded, racist, man in American History.
“John Edgar Hoover was the first Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) of the United States from March 22, 1935 – May 2, 1972.”
“He was instrumental in founding the FBI in 1935, and is credited for building the FBI into a large and efficient crime-fighting agency, and with instituting a number of modern innovations to police technology, such as a centralized fingerprint file and forensic laboratories.”
Clearly, the man was intelligent beyond measure. “Born on New Year’s Day in 1895, in Washington, D.C., he grew up near the Eastern Market in Washington’s Capitol Hill neighborhood. He obtained a law degree from George Washington University and later was hired by the Justice Department.”
Yet, despite being one of the most feared men during his tenure as director, who knew Mr. Hoover was perhaps gay.
Some suggest these are mere rumors or speculation; however, who better to keep a secret than the Director of FBI.
Now I have yet, to see the movie, however, my mother called me and said truly this is a MUST SEE!
According to Wikipedia:
“Since the 1940s, rumors have circulated that Hoover was gay. It has been suggested that Clyde Tolson, an associate director of the FBI who was Hoover's heir, may have been his lover."
Clyde Tolson & J. Edgar Hoover
"Hoover hunted down and threatened anyone who made insinuations about his sexuality. He also spread unsubstantiated rumors that Adlai Stevenson was gay to damage the liberal governor's 1952 presidential campaign. His extensive secret files contained surveillance material on Eleanor Roosevelt's alleged lesbian lovers, speculated to be acquired for the purpose of blackmail."
"Some authors have dismissed the rumors about Hoover's sexuality and his relationship with Tolson in particular as unlikely, while others have described them as probable or even "confirmed", and still others have reported the rumors without stating an opinion. Hoover described Tolson as his alter ego: The men not only worked closely together during the day but also took meals, went to nightclubs and vacationed together. This closeness between the two men is often cited as evidence that they were lovers, though some FBI employees who knew them, such as W. Mark Felt, say that the relationship was merely "brotherly".
"Tolson inherited Hoover's estate and moved into his home, having accepted the American flag that draped Hoover's casket. Tolson is buried a few yards away from Hoover in the Congressional Cemetery."
“In his 1993 biography Official and Confidential: The Secret Life of J. Edgar Hoover, journalist Anthony Summers quoted "society divorcee" Susan Rosenstiel as claiming to have seen Hoover engaging in cross-dressing in the 1950s. She stated that on two occasions she witnessed Hoover wearing a fluffy pink dress with flounces and lace, stockings, high heels and a black curly wig, at homosexual orgies.”
Side Bar ~ Well I be dayummm . . . I guess you like playing on my team.
I’m still mad why know one called him out a long time ago. However, it was a different time back then, and people knew how to practice discretion. But, as always the truth always comes to the light.
J. Edgar Hoover, never married or had any children . . . So maybe marriage or children weren't his cup of T.
However, I dare to say HOW U DOIN'?
